CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Room Service
The lunch that Marilyn promised me took place two weeks later at Marilyn’s bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Publicly, Marilyn explained to people that she kept the bungalow for when Joe was out of town on one of his frequent business trips.
Not ten minutes after arriving, I learned the truth.
“I keep this place just to get away from Joe. Honestly, he drives me crazy sometimes.”
Marilyn was sipping champagne and putting on makeup. She seemed to be prepping for a meeting.
I asked her if she was going somewhere.
Marilyn lit a cigarette. “Maybe. I might have to run over to the studio and meet with Zanuck. Charlie’s gotten them to drop that horrible Pink Tights. All I have to do is There’s No Business Like Show Business. And if I do that, then I get Seven Year Itch. It’s guaranteed to make me a huge star.”
“I’m sorry, Marilyn, I hate to tell you this, but you’re already a huge star.”
Marilyn considered this for a moment. “There’s no such thing as too big.”
I had something I’d been wanting to tell Marilyn for some time and I was nervous. Finally, after some small talk, I worked up the courage to say it.
“Would you be mad at me if I quit running your fan club?”
Marilyn’s reaction surprised me. She turned to me, glass of Dom in hand, with a very bemused look. “Are you kidding? It’s about time you quit. That place is a disaster since I got big. I don’t have any idea how you managed so long. Let Grace and the other girls handle it. You need to focus on school.”
I almost cried from relief and ran over and embraced her. Marilyn could see I was in a bunch over the decision.
Marilyn smirked. “Hey, this probably means we can spend more time together. Now that your schedule has opened up.”
I hugged her again and the tears poured. “I thought you’d be mad at me.”
Marilyn sat me down on the bed. “We’re friends. No one can take that away. Just because you’re quitting the fan club doesn’t change one thing between us. Deal?”
Marilyn held out her hand. I took it and we shook. “Deal,” I agreed.
Moments later the phone rang. Marilyn answered then hung up after just a few words. She slapped on a fresh coat of lipstick, blotted her lips on a tissue, and wrapped a scarf around her head.
“Show time,” she said.
“Was that Mr. Zanuck?”
“Who?” asked Marilyn with a wry smile. “No. It was the big bad wolf. He’s gonna huff and puff and make Pink Tights go away.”
Marilyn paused at the door. “Order anything you want,” and with that, she left.
I was in my glory, a fourteen year old with carte blanche in a four-star hotel. I picked up the phone and ordered a cheeseburger, a strawberry milkshake, fries, and a large Coke.
Twenty minutes later there was a knock at the door. When I jerked the door open, I found a very disappointed young man in a server’s outfit, fully prepared to meet Marilyn.
